About this site

Sell My Car New York City is a seller's guide for the five boroughs. Each page takes one situation a New York City seller runs into, finds the rule the New York DMV or a city agency publishes for it, quotes that rule beside a link to the agency's own page, and sets out the steps in order. It points to one way to sell: an instant online offer from a partner buyer.

What this site is

A guide, not a storefront. The pages cover what comes up when a car in New York City has to go: plates, title, inspection, a lien or a lost title, a tow pound, judgment debt from tickets, and tolls that arrive after the sale. Where New York State sets the rule, the page quotes the New York DMV; where the city does, it quotes the Department of Finance, the NYPD, the Department of Sanitation or 311. The agency's words sit in quotation marks beside a link to their source.

Who it is written for

Someone in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or Staten Island who owns a car and wants it gone. Often the car is old, will not start, failed inspection, took damage, or carries a title in the wrong name. Sometimes the paperwork is the problem: a deceased parent on the title, a lender holding the lien, a plate never surrendered. The guides assume no prior knowledge of the DMV.

How the site is paid

Through a referral. The offer button opens a partner buyer's site, where the buyer prices the car and arranges pickup on its own terms. When a sale that began here is completed, the buyer pays this site a referral fee. You pay nothing to read the guides or to request the offer, and you may decline it. The price, the pickup, the inspection at pickup and the check are the buyer's; this site has no part in setting the figure. See how the offer works.

What this site is not

Not a dealer, and it holds no dealer license. Not a broker or a buying service: it does not take your car, hold your title, negotiate for you or handle a payment. Not a government office, and nothing here is legal advice. It cannot look up your registration, cancel your insurance or surrender your plates; for an answer about your own record, go to the New York DMV or the city agency the guide links.

How a page is researched and re-checked

Each rule, fee, form number and deadline is read from the agency's own page on the day the guide is written, never from memory. Passages the agency wrote are copied word for word and marked as quotations. Before a page is published, a check re-fetches the source page behind every quotation and refuses any quotation no longer found there. After each release, every outbound link on the site is fetched again, and a dead one fails the release. The check runs again before any later change ships, and each guide shows the date its sources were last re-checked.

Corrections

If a line here is out of date or wrong, email help@sellmycarnewyorkcity.com with the page address and the sentence in question, and the agency page that says otherwise. A confirmed error is fixed on the page and its sources are re-checked at the same time. You can also call (332) 456-9629; the contact page says what the line can and cannot do.
